HOW TO PREPARE A FILE FOR PRINTING, SO THAT THE FINAL EFFECT IS THE BEST

In our printing house we make all printed elements dedicated for board games – card decks, boards, tokens, tiles, boxes, instructions. Below you will find information and examples of how to prepare files for printing so that you are satisfied with the final result.

CARD DECKS

First of all, the cards should be divided according to size – each card format should be prepared in a separate file.

The deck of cards should be prepared in one pdf file.

The cards should be prepared as consecutive pages in a file alternately: card no. 1 front side, card no. 1 reverse side, card no. 2 front side, card no. 2 reverse side, card no. 3 front side, etc. For example, a deck file consisting of 30 cards should have 60 pages.

Example pdf file for a card deck – here.

The size of a page in a pdf file should be the size of a card extended by 6 mm (printing bleed – 3 mm on each side of the card). For example, a 63 mm x 89 mm card should have pages in a pdf file size of 69 mm x 95 mm (more about printing bleeds).

A template of the deck of cards for the most popular formats can be found below:

63 x 88 – pdfxcf (Gimp)

41 x 63 –  pdfxcf (Gimp)

A few remarks:

If you want to print cards in several dimensions, prepare separate files for each dimension of the cards.

If you want to have several copies of the same card in the deck, place several copies of the card in a file.

Insert the “target” card dimension (e.g. card_63x88.pdf) in the file name – this will minimize the likelihood of possible mistakes.

Do not place a cutting line on the card – the cards will be cut centrally to the format specified in the order.

ONE PIECE BOARDS

Please prepare the boards in a pdf file.

One file per one board dimension.

The boards should be prepared as consecutive pages in a file alternately: the front side of board no. 1, the reverse side of board no. 1, the reverse side of board no. 2, the reverse side of board no. 2, etc.

The size of a page in a pdf file should have the size of a board extended by 3 mm from each side (printing bleed). For example, a 200 mm x 150 mm board should have pages in a pdf file size of 206 mm x 156 mm. (more about printing bleeds)

A few remarks:

If you want to print boards in several dimensions, prepare separate files for each dimension of the boards.

If you want to have several copies of the same board, place several copies of the board in a file.

Insert the “target” board dimension (e.g. board_200x150.pdf) in the file name – this will minimize the likelihood of possible mistakes.

Do not place a cutting line on the board – the boards will be cut centrally to the format specified in the order.

TOKENS, TILES

PDF file with a token or tile – in the name of the file the given shape, dimension and number of individual tokens/tiles.

If the tokens/tiles are to have graphics on both sides, please send two separate files and mark it in the file name (obverse or reverse).

When ordering one-sided tokens/tiles, we always select background for the other side of the tokens/tiles.

Ensure that a safe margin of error is maintained when designing tokens/tiles. Due to the fact that the technology used is different from high volume printing, it is important to take into account certain shifts of the obverse to the reverse and some shifts of the punching from the intended cutting lines.

BOX

The box designs are divided into two groups.

Small boxes (smaller than 20 x 30 x 5 cm) – you can prepare your own project using commonly available templates (e.g. http://legacy.pandagm.com/template-generator/).

Please do not mark any cut/bend lines in the graphics, but only in a separate layer mark the cut/bend grid.

Large boxes, with dimensions of a standard box of board games and larger – please send pdf files of each side of the box separately. In the name of the file please put the markings of which side the file refers to.

All graphic files should be prepared with a print bleed of at least 15 mm on each side of the graphic (more about printing bleed).

BOARD

Please prepare a pdf file with the whole board, without dividing it into individual elements of the board.

INSTRUCTIONS

The instructions are printed in the form of a brochure, stitched together and folded in the middle. Please prepare the instruction files in the form of a multi-page pdf file, each page in the file is another page of the instruction, without combining the individual pages.

It is recommended to take the printing bleed into account (more about printing bleed).
